Private Party Buying
Buying from a private party or an individual is a much different ball game than at a dealership. But that doesnt mean there arent just as many perks and pitfalls to be aware of before you begin.
You usually wont feel the heat of high pressure sales tactics, and generally you can find better deals going this route. However, its entirely possible that individual sellers can be just as dishonest as the stereotypical used car dealer. Some may try to hide major flaws knowing that theres little liability after the sale in As-Is deals. A warranty is not usually provided, unless an existing warranty can be transferred.
Dealers are businesses, but most of the time individuals are selling cars in their spare time when theyre not at work. Be considerate of the time you call individuals about their cars, and make sure that if the ad states a time to call you follow their guidelines.
Keep in mind that ones only recourse when a private party deal goes sour is small claims court. This is unlikely, but still a good reason to keep thorough and detailed notes and records of your transactions.
